Love on the Rocks is live on the Zon today and I’m so excited to finally be able to share Callie and Nikos’s story with you! It’s always bittersweet to let the characters who have taken up so much space in your mind and heart go out into the world. But it’s also very exciting to know that they’ll soon be in readers’ hearts and minds (at least I hope).
Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes so it was a real treat to write this book with all its banter, miscommunication, sexual tension and yearning. And the characters! I’d definitely want a bestie like Callie in real life; she’s funny, loyal, generous, and says exactly what’s on her mind. Plus, she makes a mean spanakopita. Nikos made me laugh and swoon in equal measure. I loved how he stubbornly refused to fall for Callie before deciding to dive head first into his all-consuming desire for her.
The best part of writing a book, after creating characters who live rent free in your head 24/7, is being able to escape into an entirely different world. In this case, that world was a fictional Greek island called Lyra. The island was inspired by several of my favorite places in Greece, a country whose people, culture, history, and food I love. Firstly, it recalls Hydra, a gem of an island where there are no cars and donkeys are used to transport people and merchandise. It’s where I first had mastiha, and ate the freshest seafood of my life (practically straight from the boat) at a shoebox-sized restaurant run by a fisherman/chef. Lyra also owes much of its inspiration to the Dodacanese islands of Symi (known for its sponge trade and delicious red shrimp) and Kastellorizo (and its famous blue grotto).
If I’ve done my job well, you’ll be booking a flight to Greece as soon as you finish the book!
